Espresso, 1900’lü yıllarda İtalyanların keşfedip dünyaya tanıttığı, basınç gücünden yararlanılarak yapılan hızlı bir kahve demleme yöntemidir.
Oldukça ince olacak şekilde öğütülmüş kahve tozunun içinden basınçlı su geçirerek yapılan kahve türüdür. Espresso İtalyanca’da ‘basınçla yapılan’ anlamını verir, bu dildeki tam kullanımı ‘caffè espresso’dur. Türkiye’de ekspresso, dünyada expresso olarak anılsa da doğrusu ‘espresso’dur. Mevzuya uzak kalanların dili Fransızcada da expresso olması bu görüşü destekler.
Batı kökenli kahve demleme türlerinin Türk kahvesine en çok benzeyeni olarak görülür.
Oldukça yoğun bir kahve türü olan espresso, her damağa hitap etmez. Su, süt veya bazen her ikisiyle seyreltilir.
Espresso Türevleri
Yabancı ada sahip hemen hemen tüm kahve çeşitleri espresso ile yapılır. Espressoya su katılır başka bir isim alır, biraz süt katılır bir başka kahve türü olur, bardağı dolduracak kadar süt eklenir bir başka isimle anılır, çikolata eklenir başka bir kimlik kazanır.
